What an incredible summer! Thanks everyone for coming out to all the various things I was doing and for supporting my music by listening, buying CDs and telling your friends about me and Chance Allies. You are the ones who make this all possible and David, Lucas and I are deeply grateful.
Some personal highlights for me were performing in Lake Edge Lutheran’s parking lot between two Madison-area jazz greats – vocalists Jan Wheaton and Maggie Delaney-Potthoff. To think that I was sharing the stage with these two women after only two and a half years of work is so humbling and so thrilling. What a night. I wonder if my brainstorm of a summer church parking lot jazz concert series will take root? I’m certainly going to give it a shot.
I also really enjoyed the opportunity to bring our music into worship at Lake Edge Lutheran and at Community of Hope. This is an evolving direction for me and for our group. The question for me is how to bring this music I love and the church, which I also love, into conversation with one another in worship as well as through the concerts we’re already doing. To that end, I’m looking forward to leading worship with Chance Allies at Memorial, UCC in Fitchburg in October.
Another upcoming opportunity in this same vein of jazz and worship is the opportunity to attend Jazz for the Journey in Cleveland, OH at the end of the October. This symposium will bring together jazz musicians who are also pastors to explore how jazz – the music, the culture and the sensibility – might bring vitality to worship in congregations across the country. I’m so excited to be in on the ground level of this effort in my denomination.
Finally, David, Lucas and I are dreaming of another recording project we hope to get off the ground this fall. Stay tuned for that and for so much more – we’ve only just begun!
See you around town!
